Over the past several years as a travel specialist, I’ve noticed a pattern.  I get that call from an excited adventurer. He knows exactly where he wants to go and what he wants to do. Excellent!  We get right to planning. I found a great flight, accommodations and activities for the most amazing trip ever.  Then I give him the price.  I can tell by the silence he is in shock and disappointed.   Yes, yes prices have changed since you vacationed with your friends on spring break in 1990’s.

Sticker shock is real when planning your dream getaway.   The travel industry reports that 90+ percent of all travelers start their search online.  The big travel sites are fun and convenient but not always personalized.  Most site quote lead in rates, that mean the lowest possible travel category.  Clients are always excited when they call me to say “Brunilda, I found a great deal online. It’s only $299.00 per person for 7 nights”.  Again, lead in pricing, most online rates don’t included transportation, travel insurance, state and local taxes, cruise fees, hotel fees, port charges, services fees and activities. A lot is missing.

The best way to plan your perfect vacation is:

1.       Plan ahead 12 to 24 months in advance- Pay today’s prices for the dream trip you will take 12 to 24 months from now.  You can get major savings just for planning ahead.

2.       Call a Travel Specialist to get an idea of pricing- Talk with a Travel Pro to get an idea of what your dream vacation will cost. Most agents can help you set up a monthly payment plan so will have enough money allotted for your trip.

3.       Make a Budget- set a realistic budget.  If you want a nice Caribbean vacation for 2, $3000 should cover but if your taking the kids to Disney, a little more duckies are required.

4.       Open a Travel Bank Account and set up automatic deductions- set up a designation account for travel.  As you see that account grow, your mind will open to all the possibilities. Plus, the automatic deductions will get you accustomed to saving for your trips.  So, when see that super special to your favorite destination come to your inbox. YOU WILL HAVE CASH TO MAKE THE DEPOSIT!

5.       Research the destination to find the must-see attractions- Now, that you have time and you have started saving the money, google away.  The internet is great for researching the restaurants, night life and adventures at your destination

6.       GET A PASSPORT- This is the best identification to have when traveling. Having a passport make your boarding and check in process go smoothly.

7.       Review Travel Insurance brochures. Make sure you and your trip are protected. www.allianz.com- This one is simple. It’s better to have and not NEED, than to NEED and not have.
